World Peace Federation 2nd Symposium “Cherish Life and Support Gun Control”
On August 15, 2022 (Monday), the second workshop of the preparatory period of the World Peace Federation, “Cherish Life and Support Gun Control”, was held in China Harbor, Seattle, Washington.
Shootings occurred in schools, churches, grocery stores, and community streets in the United States, including the shooting massacre in Chicago, Illinois, on US National Day this year on July 4th.
Recently, in the early morning of August 12-13, another catastrophe came, and five shooting cases occurred in the Seattle area of Washington state.
What we have seen and heard makes us feel the pain we have never felt before.
According to the “Gun Violence Archives” website, there will be 356 mass shootings in the United States in 2022. Mark Bryant, co-founder and executive director of the site, previously said that the frequent shooting violence in the United States is not unrelated to the increase in the number of guns. He pointed out that “under the new crown epidemic, the number of shooting cases in the United States has increased sharply, and the rate is even higher than the normal monthly growth rate.”
At present, the safety of the American people is particularly worrying. However, how to deal with this terrorist phenomenon, how to improve people’s right to own guns as a defense, and how to prevent deaths caused by guns and bullets are the keys that the whole society needs to explore.

FIRST SPEECH BY LEO LEONARD, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD PEACE FEDERATION
Hello everyone, my topic for today is “Gun Control Is Crucial to Protecting Lives”.
Life is a beautiful symphony, a gorgeous classic poem. Life is precious, it belongs to each of us, but only one chance. The most important thing in this world is that our lives still exist. We love life, and we should cherish life even more, because life is beautiful.
In recent years, frequent shooting incidents, especially the sound of gunshots on campus, have strangled young lives in the cradle and cast a shadow over people’s safety. The bloody shooting took many innocent lives and watched fresh life disappear in an instant, destroying entire families. When we turn our eyes to those homes that are no longer complete, it deeply hurts everyone’s heart and seems so helpless. What we saw and heard made us exclaim, who took precious lives?
Emotionally out of control gunmen and eyeless bullets will shatter warm homes one by one. Life and death, pain and joy, leave people with endless pain, sorrow and grief.
How to improve people’s right to own guns as a defense, and how to prevent guns and bullets from causing death, is the key that the whole society needs to explore.
Gun control, if everyone is allowed to own a gun, this will lead to an increase in crime in urban areas because you can’t identify the real gun owners and criminals. Increased gun ownership has led to an increase in mass public shootings. Restrictions on gun ownership have reduced the frequency of mass public shootings, according to research from the University of Chicago.
To deter any intruder or burglar, under the U.S. Constitution, everyone has the right to own a firearm for lawful purposes, and this includes the use of firearms for domestic self-defense.
The right to self-defense cannot exceed the right to deprive him of his life. The right to bring down the criminal, but not the right to kill him.
So here comes the question. All firearms and ammunition currently sold are live ammunition. I wonder if it is possible to develop a non-lethal means of self-defense.
Everyone has the right to life, and all illegal and criminal acts should be punished by national legal mechanisms.
Prevention is all about sounding the alarm and reminding people regularly, through schools and the community, to prevent accidental and deadly shootings that shouldn’t happen.
Violence is preventable. And a cure is possible.
Like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the Violence Prevention Hotline seeks to have professional counselors available to answer calls from those in distress. The difference is that the Violence Prevention Hotline will try to contact and work with people who are considering violence against others.

INTERVIEW: Washington State Congressman Adam Smith
Washington State Congressman Adam Smith, is a politician who has been elected to the 105th and 7th Congress as a Democrat since January 3, 1997.
When a reporter asked about gun control in the U.S.,he said: We talked about the Washington State initiative for gun loopholes. Requiring nationwide background checks is still not enough. It needs a nationwide effort to strengthen. Excessive use of offensive weapons and firearms goes far beyond what is required for self-protection. Nationally, we have work to do on gun control. It’s not just about the law, it’s more about educating the public in support of gun safety laws.
INTERVIEW: James Bush, King County Executive Office, Wa
James mentioned that Washington has passed a couple of state-wide initiatives to help with limiting access to rifles and other guns. All are good and reasonable changes. More changes will come and these changes will all help impact future changes to our gun laws.
INTERVIEW: Bellevue C ity Councilman – Janice Zane
She said:Low gun control in Washington because most decisions are made at the Federal level but Washington is one the states that has done a great deal of work on gun control laws, such as the red flag law that permits our police to petition our state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who they believe may present a danger to others or themselves. We also ban guns in school grounds, city hall, and many other community locations.
INTERVIEW: Member of Parliament Candidate, Successful Entrepreneur – Zhang Dongqing
Zhang Dongqing is a successful Bellevue businesswoman with a proven track record in the community. She has led numerous charitable efforts over the years that have benefited hospitals across the state.
She has a child, and the recent mass shooting at the school has her now worried for the safety of her child and other school-going children. She doesn’t have a solution, but she knows that gun control needs to be strengthened, whether at the state or federal level, guns should be taken from individuals, and there should be more checks like background checks, etc.
The reporter asked what do you think about the school shooting case? What do you think about gun control?
She said: School violence in the United States has always been a relatively big problem, mainly because it is necessary to strengthen gun management now. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen the psychological quality and psychological counseling of some adults, and to strengthen the work in this area. The perpetrators of school violence may have mental and psychological problems. Therefore, this psychological education for all primary and secondary school students and adolescents is very important, that is, to solve the psychological education problems of these young people. Don’t be violent or even lose their normal sanity compared to their younger children.
The gun issue, now we need to control the gun issue. The background investigation of this gun issue needs to be more rigorous. Only people with a certain background can own guns. This should be controlled and then logged in. Further systematization, and regular management and control.
INTERVIEW: Community Representative – Lisa
The reporter also asked Lisa what do you think of the school shooting case? What do you think about gun control?
she says: When you talk about gun control to a lot of Americans that’s scary because a lot of Americans think it’s their constitutional right to own a gun so I personally believe that if people want one or two for personal use to protect themselves that’s fine but I think the best way to go about limiting mass shooting is to actually make all ammunition very expensive and taxes and to let people have all the guns they want because that’s a constitutional right but please make hard to buy.
Prevention is all about sounding the alarm and reminding people through schools and the community that all unexpected and deadly shootings should not happen, and that social stability is the common wish of everyone.
